Info for Volunteers 

In the highest governing body of the IHK – the General Assembly – the democratically elected representatives of the regional business community exercise their self-administration. According to our statutes, their responsibilities include defining the strategic guidelines of the IHK’s work and adopting statutory regulations. The General Assembly also has the exclusive authority to approve the financial plan as well as to determine the amount and structure of membership contributions. In addition, it elects the President and up to eight Vice Presidents and appoints the Chief Executive Officer. 

Main Areas of Volunteering

• Examiners (“Prüferinnen & Prüfer”)
  • Qualified professionals and practitioners assess apprentices, evaluate final and intermediate exams, and ensure the quality of training outcomes in the region. 
  • For many of the roughly 11,000 annual public-law exams administered by IHK Leipzig, these volunteer examiners are indispensable. 
• Governing & Advisory Bodies
  • Volunteers participate in the general assembly (“Vollversammlung”), advisory committees and other bodies that guide policy, strategic planning and the chamber’s institutional decisions. 
  • They help represent IHK’s interests externally for example in municipal or state-level consultations and act as a voice for the regional economy. 

Why It Matters

This voluntary engagement keeps training and certification closely aligned with real business practice, gives the regional economy a direct voice in shaping education and policy, and ensures that the chamber represents a broad, transparent and diverse cross-section of industries and company sizes.

How to Get Involved

• Practically any qualified professional or company manager can apply to become an examiner or volunteer member of IHK bodies. Requirements typically include professional experience, good judgment, and willingness to commit time. 
• The IHK organizes training for new volunteer examiners so that they are prepared for their role.
